Places to Visit in Taiwan Under the Raging of COVID-19 Pandemic
by Vicky Liu
The coronavirus outbreak that started in late 2019 has become a pandemic around the world. In Taiwan, there are currently 440 people as of positive symptoms diagnosed with coronavirus. However, college students may be more concerned about their graduation trips abroad having to be canceled. During this tumultuous time, what are some alternatives for students who want to travel and have fun with their friends?
Since it is not recommended to travel abroad by Taiwan Centers for Disease Control, students need to find places that are safe for them to visit and explore in Taiwan itself rather than abroad. According to the Taiwan Centers for Disease Control, besides Hualien, Taitung, and the offshore islands of Taiwan, other cities and counties in Taiwan have reported confirmed cases either local contracted or contracted from abroad.
Hualien and Taitung are two cities known for their beautiful scenery. With vast plains and high mountains ridges, tourists from many countries enjoy visiting these places to enjoy being close to mother nature. Moreover, these two cities are now with no confirmed cases of the COVID-19 virus.
Hualien, situated in the eastern part of Taiwan, is a city with mountains and torrential gullies. Visitors can overlook magnificent views of the Pacific Ocean and admire the first sunrise of the year in this beautiful city. Qixintan Scenic Area is a place where people can enjoy views of both the ocean and the mountains. This site also includes some scenic trails and viewing towers. Another scenic area in Hualien is Liyu Lake. There are footpaths for hiking and camping areas where families can appreciate some quality time together during these difficult and frightening times. However, if tourists are more in an intellectual journey, they can consider visiting the Pine Garden. The Pine Garden is a historical site built during the World War II period. There, people can learn about some historical background of this location. It is connected with a pine forest where visitors can also see where the MeiLun river enters the Pacific Ocean.
Besides Hualien, Taitung is also a good choice for people bringing to go on a trip. Similar to Hualien, Taitung is a city close to the Pacific Ocean, and it is also a fantastic place for people to appreciate the beauty of mountains and rivers. Luye Plateau is a geographical highland located in Taitung. Visitors there can experience the fun of going on hot-air balloon rides or going paragliding. The excitement of these activities and views allow visitors to forget about all anxiety caused by COVID-19. Another activity is to slide down the green hills on cardboard sleds. This is entertaining without costing a lot of money. After having some fun, tired visitors can have a short break at Jin Tsun Café. Jin Tsun Café serves coffee alongside scenic views of mountains and the beach. There is much more to explore in Taitung, but visitors should bear in mind that it would be better to drive a car when you are traveling due to the lack of public transportation in the area.
Last but not least, people need to stay healthy and safe even when on a trip. First of all, travelers need to make sure that they are in good health by measuring body temperature on a daily basis and washing hands before eating, after going to the bathroom, returning home from a public area, and so on. Secondly, travelers should wear face masks and keep correct social distances during this period of time. Let’s travel with safety in mind together for everyone’s health!
